Linux proven to be FAR more Secure than Windows - on Both Desktop & Server

Read this excellent article:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/10/22/security_report_windows_vs_linux/#execsummary

An excerpt:

"We queried the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) database and the CERT data confirms our conclusions by a more dramatic margin. When we queried the database to present results in order of severity from most critical to least critical, 39 of the first 40 entries in the CERT database for Windows are rated above the CERT threshold for a severe alert. Only three of the first 40 entries were above the threshold when we queried the database about Red Hat. When we queried the CERT database about Linux, only 6 of the first 40 entries were above the threshold. Consider also that both the Red Hat and Linux lists include flaws in software that runs on Windows, which means these flaws apply to both Linux and Windows. None of the alerts associated with Windows affect software that runs on Linux. the alerts associated with Windows affect software that runs on Linux."

Mobile / Smartphone Question of the Month

WHY aren't voice & "3G" cellphone frequencies simply updated with SOFTWARE for switching carriers??

For example, when switching a GSM  device from T-Mobile to AT&T...

Or a CDMA device from Verizon to MetroPCS....

Or, when a carrier buys a new range of frequencies - like MetroPCS did in NYC....

This SHOULD all be a "software update" and/or settings...

Why isn't it?

Website Designers: Flash is OVER. History. Drop it like a hot potato.

I highly recommend that you remove all Flash from your site.  Flash is on it's way Out.  The entire world hates Flash so much, it's intentionally being blocked or omitted on more and more platforms.

iPhone, iPad for example refuse to support Flash.

As a replacement, I recommend either an animated GIF or HTML5.

The Website that Changed the Entire World (Clue: It was created in 1991)

If there was one site that would change the world for ever, it would be the first ever website created by internet pioneer Tim Berners-Lee. It went online on 6 August 1991 offering people help with using the brand new 'World Wide Web', rather modestly described as a "wide-area hypermedia", now archived at www.tinyurl.com/3apuu . If Berners-Lee had known what was to come, he might have added: "This is going to be awesome!"

The One Simple Change Canonical Could Make to Increase Ubuntu Adoption 100 Fold

Since Ubuntu cannot legally play MP3, nor a host of other non-free formats / codecs,..... in the USA,.... what I WOULD love to see the Ubuntu Store sell is:  a COMPLETE multimedia license,  along with all the proprietary codecs, for use LEGALLY within the USA.  But it needs to cost $0.99 ........or $3.99 at the very most.

This would help the widespread adoption of Ubuntu on the desktop in this country more than any other single decision / partnership Canonical could make.

The number one complaint from tech reporters and reviewers, time after time, is always the same:  media, flash, Java, DVD, MP3, etc.... "don't work"..... out of the box.

The purchase of the $0.99 multimedia license, and installation of all such codecs, is so important,  it SHOULD be included in the actual INSTALLATION process.

Imagine 100 times more Ubuntu  users from this one simple change.

And no more "gray areas", legally,  for users in Intellectual Property "Police States", like USA.

People complaining that You are sending them Spam? This is a Must READ!

This is VERY important!

A virus must have stolen your email login & password.  .....and given it to a spam bot net.  .....and your email account is being used by spammers!

Here's what you must do ASAP!

Some computer that you have used to login to Your email account must have a keyboard capture virus..... and it has captured your email login password.

How to Fix This:

(1)  Go to a known clean computer (Not Your Own!), and change your email password ASAP.  Maybe a computer at your workplace, or a friend's house who knows s/he has up-to-date antivirus software running.

(2)  Scan for viruses, all computers you've ever used to login to Your email.  I recommend the totally free one called http://malwarebytes.com You only need the free version.  Make sure the program finds AND removes all viruses, worms, trojans, etc. it finds.

If you don't do anything about this, your email account will be shut down by your email provider.... and getting it back will be a bit of a nightmare.

Nip this in the bud IMMEDIATELY.

I own a computer company.  If you had one of our computers you could not get a virus -- Ever.  :)

Good Luck!

Apple iPhone sues to try to survive Competition / the Death of Intellectual Property

Copying the rounded exterior design and touchscreen interface --- neither are new --- is not a matter of it being simpler to copy than to create.   It's a matter of the NATURE of form follows function.  It's like a sculptor slowly revealing what is innate --- what FORM will work best for humans.

IP ("intellectual property") Law has done more harm to humanity than any other greed-based law.  The IP philosophy results in new, better, more efficient, greater, technologies being WITHHELD from benefitting mankind.... in favor of benefitting only ONE entity instead. Whether through poor consumer design, unreasonable pricing, management incompetence, or simply intentionally buying a patent to SIT ON IT.... so as to eliminate competition and/or milking old inventions for all the profits they can get out of them...   while DEPRIVING MANKIND of all benefits.

I thank God that IP is dying a fast death.

Ask any 60 year old where records (music) came from.

Ask any 20 year old where music, movies, TV, audiobooks, eBooks come from.

Modern sophisticated desktop operating systems of the future, like Ubuntu, come with BitTorrent technology built-in.  ......for the benefit of ALL mankind.

Sounds drastic, I know.  But it's true.  IP will die.  And we will all be able celebrate its death.

The Next Facebook: What will Replace Facebook

Sorry. But. Facebook really blows.

It only has ONE thing going for it. Critical Mass.

I hope this FB fad gets replaced.... SOON.

Yeah. I think what will replace Facebook will be something like a
Facebook LITE... I envision something as simple as twitter... NO
applications. Only connections and a status wall for sharing....
But some way to make PHYSICALLY MEETING someone a requirement for them
to "friend" each other. How could that be achieved technically? A
physical token of some sort? Both people have to be logged on from
the SAME device at the SAME time in order to become "friends"??

:)

Only Love,

Bruce
